Guy Fawkes (1570-1606)

A big festival in England is the Guy Fawkes night (5th November). It's
also called bonfire night. We burn fires, and send fireworks into the sky
and generally make a lot of smoke. This happens as a celebration of the
failure of the Gunpowder Plot of the 5th of November 1605 in which a number
of Roman Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, attempted to blow up
the Houses of Parliament. Fortunately it didn't work. Some time ago it was
popular to burn "guys" - dolls that were made to look like Guy Fawkes.
This doesn't happen a lot nowadays. There are some special foods, like
bonfire baked potatoes and apples covered in toffee. Hundreds of thousands
of pounds are spent every year on fireworks. This is also the time of year
when firefighters don't get bored.
