The American Civil War

The American Civil War was the bloody war, which lasted from 1861 to 1865. The war had several causes.

Firstly, there were ecnomic and social differences between the North and South. While North was industrial and richer, South remained agricultural. Secondly, there was an argument between states and federal rights. Individual states awanted to have more free power to govern their affairs and this was in the contrast with the plan of strong central government.

Another problem was a slavery. While most of the northern states were against keeping slaves, most southern states were for it. One of the causes was also the growth of Abolitionist movement. It was a movement that wanted to abolish slavery worldwide and became more and more popular in America.

The cause of the Civil War was also the precidensy of Abraham Lincoln. The southerners believed that he wanted to abolish slavery in all America and did everything in favour of northern interests.

The war began on the 12th April 1861 in the Fort Sumpter. When war began both sides called for men to fight for them. It was sometimes very difficult to choose the side. The war separate a lot of families. The North was more populated, had more food sources and also more weapon factories so they prepared for war much better. However, the North face one great difficulty.

The only way how they could win was to conquer the South. On the other hand the only thing the South had to do was hold out until the North grew tired of fighting.

The war was fought in 2 main areas – Virginia and Missisippi valley. At the beginning, in Virginia, the Union army suffered from numerous defeats. This happened mainly because of great Confederate generals Robert Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson.

The Civil War ended by the win of the Union army. The end of the war brought the end of the slavery and also it finally decided that the United Sates was one nation, whose parts could not be separated.
