Mohl byste mi někdo zpřipomínkovat review na „Of Mice and Men“ ? (doporučená literatura na letošní CAE) – díky moc !
The book Of Mice and Men is one of the most famous pieces of John Steinback,
the recognized American writer, who was awarded by Nobel Prize for Literature.
This novella was written before the second World War in 1937.
It starts off with George and Lennie (the 2 main characters), who ran away from
their last job on a ranch. They find a new job on another ranch, and are trying
to save up enough money to buy their own land and farm. Lennie is mentally
handicapped and George is taking care of him. It is difficult for them to keep a
job for longer time, because Lennie often gets in trouble. The last job became
fatal for both of them and the end of the book is little bit gloomy.
This is powerful story of friendship between two humans and their effort to
realize their dreams. From my point of view the relationship of the two men was
really unique and I did not cease to admire the patience, which demonstrates
George, with his handicapped fellow. I was amused by the dialogs in the
narrative, where George often talk to the other boy, as father to son and is
explaining the same things again and again, without sings of comprehension from
Lennie.
I must say, that I was shocked when reading the last pages, the ending of the story was sudden and unpredictable ! Who would expect that such a lovely story ends when Lennie is killed by George ? Although it was kind of rescue for the poor disabled boy, it was higly emotional ! I strongly recommend to read this book, at least to learn, what happend on the farm and why Lennie has to be shot by his friend.
