˛I see a great city whose fame will touch the stars,˛ Libuše, a mythical Czech princess, proclaimed in a prophetic trance, while standing on the Vyšehrad cliff above the Vltava river. It seems that her vision has been fulfilled. In the course of hundreds of years of architectural and spiritual development, Prague has become a beautiful and magical city with unique charm, reaching for the stars with both her beauty and her countless spires.
Not far away, spires of the Clementinum, a former Jesuit college, tower above the surroundings; the most dominant of them is the astronomical tower with a sculpture of Atlas on its top. Up until 1918, midday was set by a clock in this tower: a signal was sent by waving a flag and from a castle bastion, a shot was fired to inform Praguers it was lunchtime. Old Town Water Tower from 1489, in which a water wheel was used to pump water, is also worth mentioning. From here, the water flew by gravity to the city fountains and breweries.
What will probably also catch your attention is a prismatic Old Town Tower from 1338, in front of which a crowd of tourists gather round every hour to admire a magnificent medieval astronomical clock with a famous parade of apostles while the clock chimes an hour. On the opposite side, characteristic towers of Týn Church, decorated by eight small spires as it is typical for the Gothic style… Prague is said to be the city of a hundred spires. If you try to count them, though, you will find there is a lot more of them.
