Dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) coupled with various network topologies and communication service protocols has adequately met the requirements of the long haul (LH) and ultra long haul (ULH) markets. However, backbone networks are mature with published reports of only 5% of their fibers currently lit. Furthermore, backbone networks are only the top layers in the matrix of moving data from the enormous geographical expanses of the information superhighway to the driveways at the last mile. Traveling on the next layer requires developing the infrastructure of the metro core, metro access, and enterprise segments.
