Travelling in Great Britain by train.

Does have somebody any expierence or information with travelling by train in Great Britain? Price, punctuality, usual train categories… . Historically: railways in Great Britain were developed earlier than in continental Europe. Nowadays railway structure in GB is quite different in comparsion with system in Germany, France or Czech republic, but there is not enough information. If it is here any railway traveller or fan, please, add coments. Thanks!

Great! But I wanted to talk with anybody. May be – there are not railway users or railway fans here :-8

Last year I travelled by train from Luton to Leicester. If I remember correctly the fare depends, among other things, on the time when you travel. Unfortunately, I was travelling in the afternoon rushour and the price was exorbitant. Event though the train was overcrowded and without reservation it took a while to find a vacant seat I was satisfied with the service. The train arrived on time and there were no problems. The carriage was equiped with power points so it was possible to use laptop. On the other hand who would use laptop when travelling through the English countryside. Some stretches of the railway reminded me of 19th century with its archaic bridges and picturesque stations. I have travelled by train in Europe, China and Japan so I was really excited about a train journey in the home land of railway. I would sum up the whole experience as rather positive. On the other hand, I know from the British press that the National Rail is constant target of criticism for overcrowded trains and inadequate service and especially for the ever growing prices. If you want to read some first hand accounts of travelling by train in Britain you can check out for instance the Commuter Spy column of the Daily Telegraph.
