The whole meaning – in the first quote I get it – (because the archeologist is interested in antique things and the older they are, the more interested he is, so the same goes for his potential wife) but here I simply can't figure it out.

PRICE is a value of something expressed in money etc, VALUE is how much it
really means for someone no matter what the price is.

Oh, come on! Imagine our ex-president or a similar guy speaking. The point is, a cynic is able to tell you, how much this or that costs but can't see how important even “cheap” things can be for a certain person.
