Dobrý den.

  • 1) Nevertheless, there is more trouble behind it than it seems at first sight.
  • 2) Nevertheless, there is more trouble behind it than it is apparent at first sight.

Mohl bych použít obě verze nebo je jedna lepší? Osobně jsem navyklý používat “than it seems”, ale poté co jsem “objevil” slovíčko “apparent” …nějak mi tu zní lépe.

  1. “more trouble behind it” sounds odd. Only five real hits on Google.
  2. There's no noticeable difference of style, register or meaning between “seems” and “is apparent”, so neither sounds “better”.
  3. This proposal has more problems than seems to be the case at first sight.
  4. This proposal has more problems than is apparent at first sight. (Not than it is apparent …) – see the Ngram.
