At the beginning he got a command which sounded that he has to hit the central span only. He probably thought it would be nearly impossible to hit such a small point from the height of about 29,000 feet and in addition the main part would play weather. Fortunatelly, it was perfect weather that day, so it was possible to comply with the command and hit the target in the end.

He probably thought it would be nearly impossible to hit such a small point from the height of about 29,000 feet and, in addition, THE WEATHER WOULD PLAY THE MAIN PART. FORTUNATELY, THE WEATHER WAS PERFECT that day, so it was possible to comply with the command and hit the target in the end.
