The Shawshank Redemption
„ Fear can hold you in prison …hope can set you free“
The Shawshank Redemption is based on the novel of the well-known AMERICAN writer Stephen King. The film was directed by the French director Frank Darabont in 1994, being considered as a thrilling drama concerning friendship, expectance and wisdom with outstanding actor´s characters. Tim Robbins stars as a young banker named Andy Dufresne being forced to face up twist of fate in the company of the older Irish named Red (Morgan Freeman). The movie is set in late 50´s up to 90´s ,taking place in the Shawshank prison, Maine, the USA. The Shawshank Redemption was awarded a lot of the criticism awards and was nominated for the Oscar seven times. Although this film did not win any, it is considered as the one of the best rated movies ever.
The plot begins with a trial. The young and succesful banker, Andy Dufresne, is accused of the crime he did not commit.He is thought to have committed a double murder and sentenced to life imprisoment in the Shawshank prison. In the prison he meets Red and others prisoners who he becomes friends with. During the first years of imprisonment he must endure the acts of cruelty and psychological torture by warders. Thanks to the fact that he used to be a banker before his imprisonment he is now being abused for laundering Director´s money. Later he starts to help warders with accountancy and evading taxation at „buckwheat“ and what´s more he is allowed to rebuild the old prison´s library and buy some new books.A few years later, in late 60´s a group of „rookies“ is imprisoned in Shawshank, and the plot has an unexpected twist because one of them, a pilferer Tommy , allegedly knows the information that could set Andy free, or at least lead to retrial. Andy asks the director of Shawshank, Sam Norton, for help but his request is disapproved and what´s more Andy is sent to a solitary cell for a month as a punishment, because Norton needs his abilities and knowledge to keep the profits. Later that day Tommy is shot on the orders of Norton. Meanwhile, without saying a word Andy has been digging a tunnel going out from his cell since the very beginning his imprisonment. Every single night he used a prospecting hammer and bit by bit deepened the hole in the wall, covering it with a poster of a famous Hollywood star. One day he decides to escape from his cell and the next morning the director reveals only the empty cell. After his breakout Andy is heading to a Bank to withdraw Norton´s savings and then escapes to a mexican city called Zihuatanejo. On the top of that he he sents some compromising information on director´s fishy practices to a newspapers. Norton commits a suicide just before the police enter his office to arrest him. Andy´s the best friend Red is discharged a few years later and decides to find the envelope he was told about before Andy´s breakout. After spending a plenty of time in the bus Red finally can see Andy fixing up his dreamed-of boat in the distance.
The Shawshank Redemption is a definitely a film worth seeing. In my opinion this movie is one of the best movies which was ever made.I would not say that it´s bound to be a box-office hit, because it was made at the same year as the smash hits such a Pulp fiction or Forest Gump. Regardless of not being so succesful as the two mentioned movies at Oscars, The Shawshank Redemption still occupies the first places of the lists of the best rated movies all over the world and, of course, it is certainly at the top of my list.
