Mohl by mi někdo poradit proč se v tomto případě čas nesune na předminulý? Je to nepřímá řeč, nebo ne?

Myslím, že mluví o tom, co si myslel ve chvíli toho začátku – tedy obě věci byly ve stejnou chvíli, ne jedna před druhou. Proto obě věty v obyč. minulém čase.

To, že tam jsou dva minulé časy, přece neznamená, že obě činnosti probíhaly ve stejnou chvíli. Jediný, co je jistý, je, že obě činnosti probíhaly v minulosti. Není třeba nic posouvat.

Aha, já to viděl jako, že v té době si pomyslel/myslel = I think he started well…nebo něco takového. Proto bych to posunul.

To je ale přesně to, co si v té době myslel. Není třeba nic posouvat, pokud nepotřebujete zdůraznit, že v tu dobu, kdy si to myslel, to už neplatilo.

No právě, že když si v té době říkal : I think he started well ---- očekával bych posun (z dnešního pohledu): I thought he had started well – nepřímá řeč?

Nevím, jak je to dle preskriptivní gramatiky, ale v běžné řeči se to normálně takhle neposouvá.

Co kdyby si v té době říkal: “He started well because he had trained a lot for the match.”?

Když byste posunul “started” na “had started”, jak byste posunul “had trained”, aby toto nebylo ve stejný čas jako “had started”?
