Pavel: the way the Southern accent is thought of is tied to the history of
the US. I plan on writing a more full article later, but here's a brief
explanation. The Southern states, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana,
etc., are constantly among the lowest in standardized test scores, like the SAT.
In addition, in the Old South, what was important was not what you knew, but who
you knew. Family ties and old money were how the South was run. As a result, all
of those conceptions, whether or not they're true anymore, are associated with
that accent. Does that make sense? Again, there's a lot more to it, but I'll go
into the rest some other time.
