Life with a foreigner

Hi everybody! I admire how could you find your boyfriends abroad. I met one guy in Paris – we both turists, speaking English. When he asked me what I'm going to study at university I was very ashamed to tell him I want to study English  My English was really horrible :-(

I'm really impressed with all of you. I live in the Southern US, and out of the US, we're the ones that are made fun of for our English. The accent I grew up with is considered uneducated. I worked very hard to get rid of it.
I can't imagine how hard all of you work on English.

About living with a foreigner- I do a lot of work with foreign exchange students, so I'm constantly trying to understand what they're saying. It's gotten to the point that, if a person is fairly good with English, I can usually tell which country they're from by the small errors they make. You learn something about another person's language when they speak yours. Do any of you who live with a native English speaker or someone to whom you must speak English ever communicate with that person in Czech (or Slovak, there was someone from Slovakia on the other page, I think)? If you do, what's that like?

I’m sorry but I didn’t get you question. Are you asking what it’s like to communicate with a foreigner in Czech?

I have some experience with teaching the English speaking person Czech. It's a big fun as Czech language is incredibly difficult (compared to English).

2brain: I absolutely agree with you. One of our Spanish teacher (native) told us that learning Czech is incredibly difficult so she gave it up and returned back to Spain becauese she couldn't learn Czech, her English was… strange so she felt lonely here in Ostrava.

But it's very interesting experience for the teacher (Czech person). It makes you think of your mother tongue from an absolutely different point of view and you can learn a lot as well.

To Gaijin: Who considers the Southern US accent uneducated?(czech teachers, who have never visited any English-speaking country?) :-D And what in particular do they disapprove of?(I'm keen to know, because many would kill to be in your shoes and speak with the american accent of any region…and you work to get rid of it!) :?

Pavel: the way the Southern accent is thought of is tied to the history of the US. I plan on writing a more full article later, but here's a brief explanation. The Southern states, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, etc., are constantly among the lowest in standardized test scores, like the SAT. In addition, in the Old South, what was important was not what you knew, but who you knew. Family ties and old money were how the South was run. As a result, all of those conceptions, whether or not they're true anymore, are associated with that accent. Does that make sense? Again, there's a lot more to it, but I'll go into the rest some other time.

I'm avid for that article. Thanks for your concise explanation, though.

hello everybody!i am new registered member of this site!i have got one question, can anybody tell me a site where i can write with real english speaking people?thanks :?:

mima1: you can try www.englishbaby.com but there aren´t just native speakers…opposite..there are many turkish and so..but when you´ll be look around carefully,im sure you´ll find someone…i met there one of my american friends :-)

Great topic. Yes, I can imagine myself having foreigner wife. My english language increased the percentage of women I can actually… meet :-] .. Finally I am not limited to slovak women. After international experience with dating I can definitely say, that having foreigner girl is much better than having money chasing slovak girl. Well, sorry girls, not just me, but most people I know have had bad experience with slovakian girls. As far as I experienced in many foreign countries, slovak girls don't give a sh!t about us – slovak men, and they are coming abroad usually for just one reason – to marry some rich guy. Mostly it doesn't mean if he is handsome… It is nothing unusal to see slovak girl with a black man with totally different religion, culture and needs. So after a while you'll see girl left crying on the street, pregnant and raped. I have even seen cases, when girl didn't learn from previous relationship with arab or pakistan or whatever.. And she did the same mistake again, marrying a different black gui, and having the same problems. Fortunately I have to remind that there are still some slovak girls with normal needs. Sorry girls… someone needs to be a brave and finally say it all. And let's not forget: How many slovak women marry foreigner VS. how many slovak men marry foreigner women. 1000:1

mima1: you can try also webside http://ppi.searchy.net/ where you can find penfriends from all over the world. You can write emails or even snail mails. I have found penfriends from UK, Finland and Japan, too. It's wonderful getting to know other culture, pleasures and worries of other people! I wish you to find good and patient penfriends!

Hello, I didn´t met a boyfriend from abroad. I only speak with my friends who are from US, UK, and so on. And my english is terrible . I can´t imagine my life with foreigner. I think that I will say him only good morning and good night :-)

Isn't in sometime too difficult to be with a foreigner? I mean the culture and some other things must be different. For instance, are they washing their hands after leaving the toilet?
