English spelling has many rules today but in the past, especialy in middle ages, there were no rules how to spell English words. This ended with the invention and usage of printing press when the first rules were established because the printers needed them to unify the print. Most of the spelling rules were fixed around the end of the 17th century.

Basic English

Did you know that there is a thing called Basic English (or also Simple English) which is a constructed variety of English language. This variety has much simpler rules and much less vocabulary so it is easier to learn it. It is used by some technical manuals and in some countries (China) they use teach it instead of „real“ English to the beginners. On Wikipedia most articles translated to English are also translated to Simple English.

Do you know that nursery rhymes are based on real historical events?

You might know this traditional nursery rhyme: „Jack and Jill went up the hill/To fetch a pail of water./Jack fell down and broke his crown,/And Jill came tumbling after./…“

Jack refers to the king Louis XVI, who was beheaded (=Jack … broke his crown), and Jill refers to the queen Marie Antoinette, who was beheaded as well (=Jill came tumbling after).
