English spelling has many rules today but in the past, especialy in middle ages, there were no rules how to spell English words. This ended with the invention and usage of printing press when the first rules were established because the printers needed them to unify the print. Most of the spelling rules were fixed around the end of the 17th century.

On Wikipedia most articles translated to English are also translated to Simple English.

Jack refers to the king Louis XVI, who was beheaded (=Jack … broke his crown), and Jill refers to the queen Marie Antoinette, who was beheaded as well (=Jill came tumbling after).
