Je to sice věta vytržená z kontextu, ale vzali byste ji jako správnou? Já na ni nic chybného nevidím, ale bylo mi řečeno učitelem, že následující dvě verze jsou mnohem lepší:

• Threatening those companies would help.
• It would help if the government threatened those companies.

Je mi jasné,ž e následující dve možností jsou také ok, ale hlava mi pořád nebere co se mu nezdá na původní větě. Je to něco očividného nebo jde jen o subjektivní pocit jednoho člověka?

Your teacher is right. The sentence is grammatically correct but odd: only six hits on Google for “would help to threaten”. Why is it odd? Because in addition to the syntactic ambiguity noted above, there's a semantic clash between the notions of “help” (positive, desirable) and “threaten” (negative, undesirable). For the same reasons, I don't think most people would find “pomohlo by” in collocation with “hrozit/vyhro­žovat/zastrašo­vat” good style in Czech either.

The collocation of “help” and “threaten” doesn't sound good, and we'd use some other wording, such as “… it would be more effective to apply pressure on …”

But the teacher's versions are still better than your original version.
