I would like to ask why the phrase ‘American consumer‘ takes the definite article in the following sentence: ‘Why No Reccesion Yet? Thank the American consumer

It's the generic use of the article:

Nejširší uplatnění má v generické funkci plurál s nulovým členem. Mezi generickým členem určitým a neurčitým je kromě uvedených rozdílů též rozdíl stylistický a významový. Nejvíce je v této funkci omezen člen neurčitý, např. The lion is / Lions are numerous in these parts. Lev je v těchto končinách hojný / Lvi jsou v těchto končinách hojní. Avšak nikoliv A lion is numerous in these parts …

In your context:

• Thank an American consumer [= one American consumer, or only one of all the many American consumers]

This is wrong here because one American consumer is not to thank for the fact that there's no recession yet. All American consumers or the generic/typical American consumer are to thank for that (because they continue to spend lots of money).

Proč k hospodářskému poklesu ještě nedošlo?

• Thank the American consumer – Za to poděkujte generickému/o­becnému/typic­kému americkému spotřebiteli
• Thank American consumers – Za to poděkujte (všem) americkým spotřebitelům
• Thank an American consumer – Za to poděkujte nějakému / jednomu ze všech amerických spotřebitelů.

Zásluhu na tom, že k hospodářskému poklesu ještě nedošlo, si přece nemůže připisovat jeden americký spotřebitel.
