will/would po IN CASE?

Back when we were still changin' for the better
Wanting was enough
For me, it was enough
To live for the hope of it all
Cancel plans just in case you'd call
And say, „Meet me behind the mall“
So much for summer love and saying „us“
'Cause you weren't mine to lose
You weren't mine to lose, no
But I can see us lost in the memory
August slipped away into a moment in time
'Cause it was never mine
And I can see us twisted in bedsheets
August sipped away like a bottle of wine
'Cause you were never mine
'Cause you were never mine, never mine

But do you remember?
Remember when I pulled up and said, „Get in the car“
And then canceled my plans just in case you'd call?
Back when I was livin' for the hope of it all, for the hope of it all

Toto je z textu písně August od Taylor Swift.

Z mého pohledu je zde použit budoucí čas – akorát v minulosti, proto zde není will ale would. Z jakého důvodu je to zde v pořádku? Je to zde v pořádku? V časových větách se přeci will nepoužívá – tedy ani s in case ne.

Napadla mě podobnost s tématem zde diskutovaným – https://www.helpforenglish.cz/…re-they-will

Nebo je to zcestné porovnání?

Předem děkuji za názory 🙂

Hmm, jediné, co mě napadá, je, že by to bylo „in case + should“.....v článku je to spíše později…

(porovnání s diskuzním vláknem mi nepřišlo na místě..)

„In case you'd call“ is non-standard usage here. Normal usage would be „(it was enough to) cancel plans just in case you called“. There are three good explanations trying to account for this non-standard usage on the Word Reference forum here.

A fourth explanation is that „you'd“ is a non-standard contraction of you should call („in case you should call“), which is correct usage for a hypothetical situation (after „in case“).

Moral of the story? Don't expect to always find standard/correct English in pop songs.

It can't be a future tense in the tense sequence it was enough to cancel plans just in case you will call.

  • It'll be enough to cancel plans in case you call.
  • It'll be enough to cancel plans in case you should call.
  • It'll be enough to cancel plans in case you will call.
  • I'm taking an umbrella in case it rains.
  • I'm taking an umbrella in case it should rain.
  • I'm taking an umbrella in case it will rain.
  • It was enough to cancel in case you called.
  • It was enough to cancel in case you should call.
  • It was enough to cancel in case you'd [= you would] call.
  • I took an umbrella in case it rained.
  • I took an umbrella in case it should rain.
  • I took an umbrella in case it would rain.

See IF v. IN CASE (HFE)

  • You should pack your swimsuit in case there's a pool.
  • Měla by sis zabalit plavky pro případ, že tam bude bazén.
  • Měla by sis zabalit plavky, kdyby tam byl (náhodou) bazén.

[The future tense expressed by „will“ is not possible: You should pack your swimsuit in case there will be a pool. ]

in case + přítomný/minulý čas

U spojení in case používáme přítomný nebo minulý čas (nikoli budoucí):

  • I'll give you my number in case you will need it.
  • I'll give you my number in case you need it.
  • I gave him my number in case he needed it. (HFE)
