Nemyslím v jeho prospěch, ale v tom negativním slova smyslu kdy dotyčný tu věc udělat nechtěl, nebo nemohl a já to za něj „odskákal.“ Třeba v práci mi vedoucí řekne, že musím za někoho udělat nějakou práci.
Použil bych tady instead of, nic jiného se mi sem nehodí. Je to tak přijatelné, a jsou ještě další možnosti?

Možno v istom kontexte sa dá použiť frázové sloveso v pracovnom prostredí STAND IN. Znamená, že za niekoho robíte nejakú dočasnú prácu, ak to neurobil niekto, kto to mal urobiťf a neurobil alebo nemohol to urobiť a potom je to oficiálne pridelené Vám – You wil be a stand-in.

Musel som to urobiť namiesto neho. (= urobiť jeho prácu)

Mně napadá třeba fill in for sb, což je podobné tomu, co píše Adriana, nebo idiom pick up the slack: He wasn't able to do it so I had to pick up the slack.

In a spoken sentence, there will be stress on „for“. Do something for someone = v jeho prospěch nebo za něj. How do we know what the intended sense is? From the context.

„Instead of“ is also ok in your context.
